Photo of the week – The porch at Villa degli Armeni

The porch at Villa degli Armeni

Goodbye summer!

This photo was taken about a month ago, in August. The hot days of summer are probably over for this year, but our porch is a great place to relax year round and enjoy the marvelous view. It’s sunny and sheltered so you can even lunch out here in the middle of winter.

Photo of the week – Cantalupo from Poggio Catino

Cantalupo from Poggio Catino

This photo was taken from the “belvedere” (viewpoint) on the main street in Poggio Catino. It’s worth a stop here on your way through the village to admire the view over the rolling hills towards Mount Cimino: olive groves, woods, valleys and many of the medieval villages of the Sabina. The main one visible in this photo is Cantalupo in Sabina.

The Fritter Festival of Roccantica

Sagra dell Fritello at Roccantica

The Sagra dell Fritello, or fritter festival, is held every year in Roccantica on the sunday following the Saints day of San Guiseppe (19th of March), in 2016 that should be 20th March.

The fritelle are cauliflower florets, dipped in batter and rapidly fried in enormous vats of oil set up in the piazza.

It’s a very popular local festival, and with good reason, the fritelle are absolutely delicious! You might not think fried cauliflower sounds too appealing but believe me they are, especially eaten straight from the pan on a sunny afternoon in early spring (accordions optional).

As well as the food the Sagra normally features local craft and food stalls and performances by the local medieval drumming group.
